What is there to do on Maui in the rain?
mathiesm asked:
We just got to Kihei on Maui for our honeymoon, and it’s our first time visiting Hawai’i. We’d planned on lounging at the beach, trying snorkeling/scuba, driving the road to Hana, and checking out the sunrise on Haleakla. All those activities seem to be in jeopardy since there’s a 30-60% chance of rain every day for the week we’re here.

Besides going to the movies and shopping are there some fun activities to do while here? Bonus points for things that can only be done while here.

The story goes… In Hawaii, if you don’t like the waether… Wait fifteen minutes…
Go! Have fun! Yes it will rain and it will clear right up!

Get in your car & drive to Lahaina…it might be sunny there. If not, plan on going to Ulalena, a really good evening show based on Hawaiian legends & traditions….read synopsis 1st. If you’re driving to Hana, be sure to bring a snack or lunch, bathing suits & camera….suggest an early start & be careful when you drive. (I was told only tourists & crazy people drive there & back….we drove there….). You can still snorkel in the rain. Sunrise at Haleakala only if it’s nice. Otherwise, you’ll see only clouds. The sun peeks out in spite of showers! How heavy is the rain?

Kihei is on the leeward side of the East Maui Volcano (the Hawaiian name Haleakala refers only to the summit). The weather forecast is for the whole island. This time of year, the rain will be brought to the island by tradewinds, so the rain will fall more on the northeast side of the islands and on the mountains. Kihei and Lahaina will actually see very little rain, even if Hana sees several inches.

Try the Maui Ocean Center. It sounds lame, but its actually pretty cool and you’ll be able to kill a few hours there.

The rain never lasts long … so go exploring!
Western Maui – Lahaina
Central Maui – the Maui Ocean Center (indoors and out), and/or a drive up to the peak of Haleakala Volcano
North Central Maui – Have lunch at “Mama’s Fish House” and watch the kamikazi wind-surfers while you eat!
Eastern Maui – take a drive to Hana, along the 35 mile “Road to Hana” – take is slow! There are over 500 hairpin turns, 64 one-lane bridges, and many parks and outlook views along the way.
Hana town area – Have a nice lunch or dinner at the Hana Maui Hotel – a top pick for the visiting rich and famous, but still reasonably priced! Take a walk afterwards around Hana Bay…
and don’t forget, make lotsa love while you’re on Maui – you won’t find a better place on earth for it!
Best regards,
OC
