I would go to the polynesian cultural center which is on the north shore of oahu –so if you stay in wakiki it could be a day trip either to the beach in the morning and the center at night or the center all day.

surfing is best on oahu of all the islands. in waikiki they give lessons if you need ‘em. and rent boards. you can rent boards and take them elsewhere on the island too. but have to have a strap to transport. . .

the volcanoes are on the big island. to go you would need to fly over there and rent a car (they sell out all the time even with reservations by the way.) and you might want to stay overnight at least. the lava is different all the time –sometimes it’s a trickle, sometimes it’s more. and if it’s a trickle then it’s better to go at night so you can actually see it. bring binoculars. and stay on the trail! people fall through all the time. even with tons of experience.

it’s a lot to pack into 5 days.
might be good to talk to a travel agent about getting tickets to the polynesian cultural center and planning some time to see the volcanoes.

I suggest go to Maui. You can go Walking on Front Street in Lahaina, Go to IAO Valley and look at the scenery, Drive to Haleakala For the sunrise (warning its going to be very cold and you need to drive a lot depending on which hotel you are staying at, you can go to the beaches ( I suggest going to Waikuli beach), and you can go surfing, Horse backriding, Fishing, Parasailing, and alot more. There is also a Luau right next to Long’s Drugs store where there is also a Mall ( a small one). And im not sure the cost but bring a more then a few hundreds just in case. The food is really great.

Just do it. Hawaii is beautiful. I would suggest staying in Waikiki on Oahu. Life here is fast and there are a lot of activities for college vacationers. The beach and surf is safer on this South shore than the monster surf on the North shore. There are no active volcanos on Maui or Oahu but you can do the Diamond Head hike in this extinct volcano. There are shops and restaurants that would cost as much as a month’s tuition but there are also local plate lunch diners (Rainbow Drive In, Zippy’s) and a local favorite store (Longs) that sells the cheapest essentials ( toiletries, beer, wine, etc.). There’s also the world famous Ala Moana Shopping Center that suits everyones taste and wallet. Most of the night clubs and big shows are all located in Waikiki. There are 2 weekly luaus in Waikiki, one at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center and one at the Hale Koa Hotel. There may be one at the Hilton Hawaiian Village but it may be the same one as the Hale Koa since they’re located so close to each other. This is a central place to start a five day Hawaii trip and get your first taste of Hawaii. I’m sure there will be many more trips after this. There are of course many different things to do and see but I focused on the Waikiki area. November is the start of the rainy season but Waikiki is the last place it rains so this is your best bet. I would plan on at least $100 per day each for a good time, $200 for a better time and sky’s the limit for the best time. You’re so lucky to be able to travel at such a young age. Just go to Hawaii and smile all the time and enjoy.

I did exactly that in 1984. Total spent: $1000. 5 days is just a speck of time. I had to go back and lived there for 15 years. It’s a paradise you will never want to leave. But, better to taste one drop than none at all. Good luck and you will definitely enjoy.
