I have never been to Maui. I have been to Oahu, it has historic sites, night life, if you like surfing, it has the pipeline. All the islands have luaus. The Wailai Valley is worth hiking into.
Kauai is the garden isle, the center of it is where the movie Jurassic Park was filmed, you can take a helicopter ride into it. It has many old type towns you can visit. Hanelai Bay is where you can find some night life, as well as a beautiful beach. Kauai is also the island where the original movie South Pacific was filmed. A place called Nurses beach. there is a rain forest you can climb through (take bug repellant) on the Napali coast. Princetown at the north side of the island has the old hotel and a golf course.

Hawaii, the Big Island. You can drive across it in 8 hours. You can go from it being very hot in Kona, to freezing in Wailai (the same climate as San Francisco) to rain in Hilo. The southern roads are blocked off by the lava flows. It is the island where Madam Pele lives, and the volcano is still rumbling. The night life is in Kona. West side of the island.

I live on Oahu, I’ve been to Kauai, Maui, Lanai and the Big Island — Maui and the Big Island multiple times. I would suggest Maui, Big Island or Oahu.

If you go to Maui, stay at the Grand Wailea for sure. It’s beautiful and they have an amazing pool complete with water elevator…it’s an elevator that fills up with water to bring it to the top where the waterslides are. (:

The Big Island is very chill. DONT go to Hilo, I don’t think you’d enjoy it. At least, I don’t. Kona side is where it’s at. The Kohala coast is beautiful and has fantastic beaches. The Big Island is beautiful but there’s also a lot of land that’s just covered in lava. LOTS of land.

For tons of stuff to do, and the most tourist attractions, come to Oahu. There’s waikiki and tons of hotels lining the beach, great restaurants and night life, and if you want comfortactivities go to Ward center and go shopping at Ala Moana or watch a movie at Ward, lol.

Kauai is the most gorgeous island i’ve been to, in my opinion. Good for photography trips (:

I live on Maui now, and I’ve lived on Oahu and Molokai for several years. I’ve visited Hawaii (Big Island) for fun, and Lanai for business. Have not made it to Kauai yet. Each island is really different. Americans tend to like Maui because it’s not as crowded, there’s not as much traffic, and we can certainly fill up a vacation with things to do.

Well, I hear the Ritz-Carlton is open again. I stayed there, and it was OK. The luxury is frankly wasted on someone like me, but they do have an excellent slack-key guitar concert once a week. Everything on the Wailea side seems to be good and posh. Y’all should look at the Hotel Hana-Maui for very relaxing and kinda fancy.

I have to tell you, though, unless you’re going to some place like Hana that is kind of remote, I do not get why people do the all expenses paid thing. There is so much excellent food served in fabulous restaurants on Maui, and there is so much mediocre food served to tourists who don’t seem to care what they eat, and I will just never understand that.

But then, the gut is very important in Hawaiian culture. In fact, many Hawaiians have quite the gut, and so do I, thank you very much. Instead of thinking with the head or feeling affection from the heart, Hawaiians talked about doing it all from the stomach. In the traditional way of thinking, if you wanted to call someone an ignoramus, you would call them a “night stomach”, implying that they had not been fed, therefore, they could not think.

There’s a singer whose last name is the opposite of Night Stomach. Na’auao means “stomach of the daytime” or “enlightened one”. And he sings one of the more famous Hawaiian songs that are all about food:

I’m goin’ down to that special place
Where you can bulk up for days.
I like my fish and poi,
    I’m a big boy,
    Pipikaula, lomi salmon,
    Extra large lilikoi,
    Squid and chicken luau,
    Don’t forget the laulau,
    Beef and tripe stew
Just to name a few, oh yeah…

I hope you get to find out for yourself what some of those things are on your visit to Hawaii. Aloha!

I have climbed through the rain forest on Kauai. I was told by locals that the beach I found was called Nurses beach. I enjoyed it very much. I will warn you though, if you take that helicopter ride, don’t have any Thai ice tea before you go. Mine came up.

If you want something relaxing and fancy your mom should definitely go to the island of Lanai at either the Koele hotel (see here) or the Four Season at Manele Bay ( see here). I have been to both of the hotels and they are really really exclusive. If your Mom decides to go to Lanai you can learn more about that island on this pages

It depends on your preference, and what you want to do while in Hawaii.

    Oahu
The most populated island, where Honolulu is the Capital City, the principal port, the major airport, and business and financial center, and the educational heart of the State. Oahu is the military command center of the Pacific. Waikiki is the visitor center. It is a fast paced, busy environment, and if you are looking for night life, this is the place for you!! Also, you do not need a rental car on this island because everything is in close walking distance there it saves you money! Landmarks: Nuuanu Pali, Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor. Cheapest Island to visit.

    Maui:
With white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, Maui is ideal for sunbathing, snorkeling and snoozing! But once you’ve gotten enough sun, Maui’s also a great place for shopping and sightseeing. The old whaling town of Lahaina is home to many quaint shops and eclectic art galleries. On the opposite side of the island, the long road to Hana will lead you to the waterfall fed pools at Oheo Gulch, a perfect place to stretch your legs and take in the view. After touring the island, you may need to unwind in Wailea with a pampering spa treatment. It’s no wonder visitors return here year after year. Most popular place for Honeymooners, Romantic getaways, and Family Vacations!

    Kauai:
From the spectacular views at Waimea Canyon to the verdant vistas along the Napali Coast, Kauai can take your breath away. More and more people are coming to Kauai because they are attracted to its natural beauty and laidback atmosphere. Visitors are also drawn to Kauai for its gorgeous tropical rainforests, some of which can only be accessed by helicopter. These aerial tours take you into the heart of the island and offer spectacular scenic views that will remain with you long after your vacation ends. Popular for Nature Lovers, and honeymooners. No night life. NOT ALL BEACHES ARE SWIM ABLE.

    Kona (Hawaii)
Explore Hawaii’s Big Island, and sense the power of volcano goddess Pele as she creates new land over old. See new vegetation growing in seemingly impossible pockets — micro views of natural cycles that civilization obscures elsewhere. Molten lava flows glowing in the dark night are a spectacular sight — destruction and creation on a grand scale. Molten lava is the Big Island’s hottest attraction, but you can also explore the cool depths of a sunstruck ocean; see local sights on foot or horseback; uncover art treasures in tiny plantation towns, play top-flight golf on internationally-renown courses; walk the paths ancient Hawaiians traveled; have a cup of Kona coffee at the source; visit cattle country, home of the paniolo Hawaiian cowboys. Wherever you go on Hawaii’s Big Island, chances are it’ll be a new experience, even if you’ve been there before! E komo mai, explore to your heart’s content. Everyone is welcome. Sightseeing Galore!
    Lanai:
Nick named “the Million Dollar Island”. There are only 2 (Luxury) Resorts on the whole island. This charming island is home to just over 3,000 people, making it the perfect place for rest relaxation, rejuvenation, rediscovery and romance. From beautiful Manele Bay to the bumpy road and scenic views of the Munro Trail, you’ll find a wide range of activities to please just about everyone. Golf on two challenging courses or go snorkeling in crystal clear waters at Hulopoe Beach. The resorts also offer excellent services for your indulgence. Relaxation and seclusion!

    Molokai:
Molokai offers the perfect place for ultimate relaxation, though you can always find some interesting things to do. Try your hand at fishing with the locals or be adventurous and go sportfishing out in the open ocean. Intimate hiking and breathtaking bicycle tours are also available. For a truly unique experience, visitors aged 16 years and older can take a mule ride down the steep cliff to Kalaupapa National Historical Park, the isolated and historic settlement of those inflicted with Hansen’s Disease. Great snorkeling.

You probably don’t want to go to Oahu. Oahu is just like the city, crowded with people and stores. But Oahu is nice, there is lots of Hawai`ian historic places, like the Iolani palace and Pearl Harbor. Maui, is more of a persons idea of what Hawaii is like. Maui isn’t crowded, and there is stuff to do. But there are beautiful waterfalls in Hana. All the other islands, are extremely small, and there’s not much to do there. Hawai`i is te biggest island, but doesn’t have much either, there are volcanoes there, which you can take a look at, which I think is cool… the vog there is bad for your health. I think you would definitely like Maui the best. Maui has some historic things too..like Lahaina, there are historic buildings and stuff, and Paia is a cute little town that attracts lots of tourists. Feel free to ask me anything about Maui, and my mom’s a knows a lot too, because we live here, and she happens to own a travel business: Hawaiitravel4u.com
